Affectionately known as "Chacha" by its residents, Chachapoyas is located on the eastern slopes of the Andes Mountains.
Wrapped in cloud forests and rugged, vegetation-covered mountains, Chachapoyas, capital of the Amazonas Region, holds a great diversity of species and landscapes.
Home to 55,201 people, the city marks a transition zone between the Andean highlands and the high rainforest.
The main economic activities are agriculture and livestock farming; commerce, however, has been growing in the provincial capital as a supply hub for the surrounding districts.
From the city, travelers can set out on a journey to the imposing fortified city of Kuélap, Peru's second-most-important archaeological complex after Machu Picchu, built along the sheer edge of a cliff.
